Why bother transferring my old footage?
Tape and film based media suffer from signal loss and advances in video technology. Each time a video is played, the tape is dragged across magnetic heads in the player, causing damage to the film and to the signal stored on that tape. Film reels are subjected to intense mechanical and thermal stresses each time they are viewed. Time itself will also cause quality loss. Tape slowly loses its magnetic charge and film is suceptible to mildew and brittleing. Once your footage has degraded beyond a certain point, it is impossible to get it back.
DVDs do not store their data magnetically and digital video will not lose quality over time. Tape based media is becoming harder to support as the current technology focuses on DVD and high definition formats such as Blu-ray. Transferring to DVD is a critical step towards ensuring your footage can be played in the years to come.
